What An Athlete Taught Me About Overcoming Addiction
The healthiest people we know aren’t immune to alcohol use disorders and other addictions
I met running and recovery coach Amber Cano by happy accident one day while perusing a Facebook sobriety group.
Someone had posted about how they were using yoga as a tool for overcoming addiction to alcohol and I followed up with a response about how I use running in a similar way.

In the Facebook group, I wrote: “Running has offered me a new hobby, a greater level of fitness, a better waistline and more confidence in my sobriety than any other health tool. It’s one of my favorite parts of sobriety.”
Amber popped into the discussion and added, “Hey! I just started a group for runners in sobriety or seeking sobriety. Join me there!” She shared the link to Recovery Road Runners, her Facebook group, and I immediately requested to join.
It’s been a valuable new community for me in many ways, but mostly because of Amber. Her story, like most people who’ve overcome addiction, is both normal and not.
